Five Lobethal Community Association Inc (LCA) volunteers worked for two hours on Sunday afternoon, March 7th, picking up rubbish from the Old Woollen Mill corner along Woodside Road to Kayannie Corner, Lobethal. The day coincided with Clean Up Australia Day and these five volunteers were a part of more than 61,000 volunteers Australia-wide caring for the environment and their local communities. The LCA is supported by the state program KESAB.
The small size rubbish was mainly drink and fast food containers, confectionary wrappings and beer bottles. Approximately 30 recyclable drink containers were retrieved. Larger rubbish was made up of various car parts, a motor bike tyre, a small car tyre and a 2 gallon empty fuel tin. Clothing this time was outer wear (last clean up it was underwear), such as tops and jackets. Cigarette boxes and butts continue to be discarded on the roadside. An audio cassette titled Learning to swim upstream was found; irony on our task of clearing rubbish once again along this road. “By all means, engage in positive but controlled encouragement such as ‘Well done Billy’”. This is advice from the Torrens Valley Soccer Club’s website on ‘Parents Code of Behaviour’. The site goes on to say that there should be no abusive shouting, no destructive criticism, no hysterics and no sideline coaching from parents. This might seem like it’s stating the obvious, but its all part of the professional direction that this Birdwood based soccer club is taking.
In the mid 80’s a group of people, who didn’t want to play Aussie rules, got together and formed the Torrens Valley Soccer Club. With grants from the local council and community help, they developed the pitch at Birdwood Park and became the Torrens Valley Soccer Club (The Rams). Now they have over 120 players and active parents involved in the running of the club. Continue reading TORRENS VALLEY SOCCER CLUB→

Twelve months ago, almost to the day, a mother and son from Lobethal were packing their bags for South America. Dianne and David Schwarz were both heading off to Buenos Aires and were about to have two vastly different experiences.
David Schwarz has been an endurance motorbike rally rider for the last 23 years and was going to compete in the world class Dakar Rally, a gruelling 14 day desert race. David competed in the 2005 Dakar Rally in Africa and that experience helped him considerably this year in South America. The race was moved there for the first time, due to political unrest in some African nations. Continue reading A trip to South America→
