Top of the Torrens Gallery was abuzz for the opening of the Birdwood High School Exhibition on Friday, 14th November, which was opened by local artist Bill Cook, who was an art teacher for 40 years.
He complimented the students and the teachers for the high standard of work, which will be moderated for year 12 assessment at the Gallery. Hannie Khune’s photos of 100 pairs of hands of every age from 1 to 100 are fascinating and Elke Cunningham’s brilliant rain forest collage is a feature.
Jessica Morris’s “Life Embrace” is a wonderful lesson about the impact of the environment on human life and Emily Cook has used her artistic ability to express her love for her brother Wayne, who died tragically 12 months ago.
Caitlin Walker’s wire flowers in a pottery vase are exquisite and Danielle Giblin’s work is bright and varied. Mathew Cummings gives us some very deep thoughts and Jamieson Kuchel will be an asset to the tattoo shop where he hopes to work next year.
Sarah Niven displays an excellent knowledge of the skeletal structure of the body and Christian Schwerdtfeger has used car bonnets as the basis for his fantastic air brush work. Watch out for Bee Snuggs next year, as her year 11 sculpture of a leopard has all the gallery volunteers jumpy, because it is so realistic. High School student, Colin Short, entertained the large crowd of teachers and parents who attended with guitar and song.
Lessons in winemaking and label design were also on display for all to enjoy the product. The exhibition will hang until the end of November. The gallery shop is full of creative gifts for Christmas.
The next exhibition called “Evoking Memories,” will be kindly sponsored by Bob and Wanda Meyers. It will be opened on Sunday, 7th December at 3pm by Dr Roger Sexton, who will also draw the raffle of 14 prizes donated by the businesses of Birdwood.
Volunteers and friends of the gallery are invited to attend to enjoy some Christmas cheer and to celebrate a successful year at Top of the Torrens!
